Yanapay is a biodiversity sanctuary;
a jewel in a landscape threatened by expanding agricultural activities.
Our mission as a non-profit association is to facilitate ethical reforestation through replantation, educational efforts, scientific research, and awareness campaigns. We believe caring for our ecosystems is a collective responsibility – so as deforestation expands, we plant.
The Land, The Mission, & The Vision
Our conservation project is based at the foothills of the Andes, in Northern Peru – a region inhabited by a diverse array of plants and animals, and of course, an increasing number of humans. Population growth and migration from the coast have led to the expansion of agricultural and urban areas, pushing back native forest areas.
One of the main objectives of Imaymana is to strategically restore the forested area using native tree species, and implementing strategies to minimise the degradation induced by human actions. These newly reclaimed areas create corridors for wildlife.
When the project begun in 2014, our knowledge about the different forest patches contained in the Yanapay forest was limited, but since then, several ecological research activities have been underway.
From these activities, this PhD thesis emerged, which studied the history of the ecological succession that took place in the Yanapay forest and several other forests of the Upper Mayo region in detail, allowing for example to determine how biomass recovered in these secondary forests depending of previous land uses.
“If you want to go fast, go alone;
if you want to go far, go together.”
— African proverb
Ready to join as a forest guardian?
Does living 30 seconds from a gorgeous river, fully submerged in the Peruvian Amazon jungle, with nothing but the songs of nature to reach your ears sound tempting? Yanapay has nothing less than that to offer, and we offer personalised volunteers programs for who has the will to participate and dedicate their time to conservation. Get in touch if you’d like to participate in the Yanapay conservation effort.
Should you rather wish to contribute through donations, this is also of great value to ensure our capacity to protect the forest against poaching and criminal fires that affect Yanapay every year, and funds are essential to invest in a strategy that will hamper human predation. If you wish to help but have no time or live too far and/or have no time, discover how your donations can help.
Mutual aid comes from the heart. Whether your skills complement ours, your efforts strengthen our work, or your economy allows you to offer financial support – we will await your message with excitment!
